Professional Compassionate Experienced
I’m Dr Mercia Spare, a professional coach, mentor, facilitator, and lifelong nurse. I’ve spent nearly 40 years working across health and social care, leading people and services through personal, professional, and complex organisational transitions.
I founded Dr M.K. Spare Coaching to create a space where individuals and teams could explore growth with honesty, curiosity and courage.
My work draws deeply on my background in healthcare delivery, leadership, regulation, clinical research and healthcare improvement. I have partnered with national bodies such as the Department of Health and Social Care, NHS Improvement, Care Quality Commission, Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit, and a wide range of NHS Trusts and health and social care organisations across the UK and Northern Ireland.
My services include executive coaching, team development, team coaching, developmental coaching, leadership development, organisational change, mentoring and facilitation.

Why I love being a coach
I’ve had the opportunity to build a rich and varied professional life across four decades in the NHS. While that experience is valuable, I don’t believe it defines my success as a coach.
The types of roles I’ve held and the range of people I’ve worked alongside have given me a unique advantage. I’ve seen up close what it means to work under extraordinary professional pressure. I’ve witnessed the values and motivations driving people to do it right for others. I’ve also seen the heavy toll that vulnerability can take, and, just as significantly, how it can be transformed into a real superpower for growth and change.
Coaching allows me to continue living out that professional philosophy: supporting people to recognise their strengths, navigate challenges, and thrive as their most authentic selves.
In my many professional roles in health and social care, I have had the privilege of learning from colleagues across all professions, at all levels and sectors, about the professional and personal challenges they face.
Whether newly qualified or seasoned executives, many face the same core challenges:
- Constant pressure to deliver more with less
- Fear of failure, regulatory scrutiny, and its consequences
- Feeling undervalued, with too little support or recognition
- Frustration with bureaucracy that hinders progress
- Conflict between ambition and sustainability, the desire to make a difference without compromising wellbeing, values, or personal life
Despite investment in flexible working, leadership development, talent management and recognition programmes, these remain the top themes.
I firmly believe that given the context of financial constraints in health and social care, leadership interventions that specifically target belonging, purpose, and possibilities at all pivotal career points will create a cultural shift that will enable our workforce to recover, thrive, and excel.
